Over 800 Air Force personnel have independently reported cases of cancer and other serious illnesses due to extended exposure to toxic chemicals while serving at three Minuteman ICBM bases since 2023. These missileers’ revelations come at a critical moment as the Air Force continues with restructuring its exorbitant $140.9 billion plan to decommission 450 Minuteman IIIs and replace them with 634 modernized Sentinel ICBMs at a cost of over $162 million each.
In a September 2025 report, the non-partisan Government Accountability Organization (GAO) blasted the Air Force for its failure to develop an essential risk management plan and warned that the service “may need to operate Minuteman III for 25 more years because of Sentinel delays and increasing costs.” This proposed deployment postponement until 2050 would span six US Presidential elections and offer opportunities to curtail a mindless nuclear weapons race with Russia and China.
The imperative for such a delay is underscored by increasingly serious revelations about Air Force stonewalling over missileers’ health issues. Launch officers work 60 feet below the surface in hardened command capsules with control over 10 nearby ICBM silos. They operate on 24-hour shifts (often extended up to 72 hours) and constantly monitor the readiness of their missiles. Missileers claim that a toxic work environment has caused a disproportionate number of cases of cancer, especially non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), and other serious illnesses.
These claims have been backed up by an April 2025 statistical analysis undertaken by University of North Carolina specialists, one of whom served as an ICBM launch officer. The results demonstrate a statistically significant increase in NHL diagnoses among missileers, with observed rates surpassing expected benchmarks. The study also finds that the median age of diagnosis is significantly younger for the study population compared to national averages. An earlier version of the report “underscored the exceptionally low likelihood of such events occurring purely by chance,” citing a probability of 2.1 in 1,000 trillion.
In September, Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) pushed through an amendment to the FY 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, requiring the National Academy of Sciences to undertake a study examining occupational health and safety conditions in underground launch facilities.
This move reflects growing Congressional alarm over the insufficient Air Force response to missileer demands as publicized through their own independent Torchlight Initiative website (www.torchlightinitiative.org). Torchlight has identified a wide spectrum of documented toxic hazards in the Minuteman ICBM environment. These include: polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in launch control centers and launch facilities; venting of dimethylformamide (DMF); off-gassing and fumes produced by evaporation of ethylene glycol solutions; and radon present in underground facilities. In addition, Torchlight lists evidence of airborne asbestos, potassium superoxide, sodium chromate, and untreated sewage gases.
“We need independent eyes, real accountability, and action to protect today’s missile community,” stated Michael Yamzon, a retired colonel who served 22 years including tours of duty at ICBM bases and now suffers from stage 4 mesothelioma. As Yamzon adds in a quote on the Torchlight website, “We’re not dying from enemy fire, but from our own environment.”
“The biggest misconception is awareness of the environment that missile operators and missile maintainers are exposed to on a day-to-day basis…. If we’re going to ask our members to work in an environment that contains toxic carcinogens, then we need to do better to track their health.” Yamzon and his missileer colleagues are seeking to include this toxic exposure under the PACT Act “to ensure that individuals diagnosed with cancer and similar diseases receive proper recognition and medical assistance.”
In February of this year, the Air Force released preliminary findings of its Missile Community Cancer Study that found no statistically significant increased incidents of cancer among Minuteman personnel compared with non-Minuteman personnel. In June, Air Force officials admitted that they had found preliminary indications that missileers were slightly more at risk to be diagnosed with cancer than the general population.
Yamzon comments: “The USAF has long been aware of carcinogens in its operational environment but hasn’t adequately addressed the issue. The current [Air Force]-directed study is biased and only examines present conditions without considering past environmental hazards. The USAF School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) identified PCBs on surfaces at three bases, mostly below EPA remediation thresholds. However, some samples exceeded these limits. Even with levels below the threshold, repeated exposure increases toxicity risk for operators, maintainers, and defenders.”
Not surprisingly, the Air Force is plagued with severe morale problems on the ICBM bases and is facing increasing difficulty in filling missileer positions. These launch crews occupy the critical ‘human-in-the-loop’ tasked with expeditiously launching Minuteman ICBMs on order from the President. Because of this, missileers must train on the assumption of ‘zero defects,’ i.e., no mistakes.
Yet, the fundamental problem is not with the launch crews. The failing is with the stubborn adherence to a bankrupt nuclear deterrence doctrine where ICBM crews have more to fear from environmental conditions in their own workplace than from a hypothetical Russian or Chinese attack.
